COWBOY FIRMS
Sadly they are not very obvious, as they don’t all wear Stetsons and Six-guns or call you ‘Pardner’!
Herewith are some tips on how to avoid them :
1. Join a car owners club , most of them will be able to give opinions on good and bad companies (see our listings).
2. Always make time to visit and inspect the premises first.
3. Get a detailed and specific written breakdown on costs.
4. Check if they are members of a good trade federation.
5. Insist on seeing your new engine built. Also that you can be present when the engine is removed to check for any ‘Extra’s’ such as Clutch parts etc.
6. Check how long they have been in business, particularly in the same name.
For example, some ten years ago Thurrock Engine Centre opened for Business offering a wonderful three year unlimited mileage guarantee, Prices 10 to 15% below ours. Then within 2 to 3 years went bankrupt leaving literally hundreds of irate customers up the ‘Swanee’ without a paddle. Guarantee work was not done, or left for so long the customers went elsewhere.
The same people continued in the area, in the same way, through five or six name changes.
7. IMITATORS : They say imitation is the sincerest form of flattery – or is it just because they are incapable of thinking for themselves ? We have one local firm whose Advert and Brochures we had to read twice before we realised they were not ours !!
CAR OWNERS CLUBS
We strongly support the owners club concept and urge all our customers to join one. As a member you get useful information from both the club and it’s members. Such as, which suppliers give the best service, which give genuine BHP, torque, fuel consumption figures, which give a guarantee that actually works properly. So you soon find out the ‘Cowboy’ companies and keeps the good one’s on their toe’s ! We for example give a full parts and labour guarantee on all parts we supply. Further, that we guarantee to have you back on the road within a maximum of 7 days of your call, in the event of a problem.
We invite all club secretaries to send us a pen picture profile including details of their national days etc.

The Morgan 4/4 Club, as it was first known, was founded in July 1951 with 63 members. Meetings were held at the Flying Horse at Kegworth and membership was largely Midlands based.
The Morgan Sports Car Club, a new name with a new Badge, arrived in the ’70’s’ as, by that time, many members were driving Plus 4s and Plus 8s. Regional Centres were added, particularly during the ’70’s’ and by 1986 there were 30 centres Continuing growth saw achieved in 1998.
Overseas clubs flourish America, Middle and Antipodies and some 2,000 members. Continuing growth saw 4,000 membership in Europe achived in 1998. Overseas clubs flourish in Eurpose, North America, Middle and far East and the antipodes and a feature in Morgan life is the number of events organised by overseas clubs to which MSCC members are invited.
The MSCC organises an annual MOG event at a different regional centre and this Millennium year it’s in Canterbury At the Univesity of Kent. From August 17th-21st 2000

A Scimitar is for Life!
The Reliant Sabre and Scimitar Owners’ Club started in 1972 and was formed by a handful of enthusiastic owners. Since inception, the Club has matured into a professional organisation providing an unprecedented level of service and an excellent magazine, a spare parts service through several committed “Trading Partners”, specialist insurance, and technical support services given freely by qualified professionals. We now have over 4,000 enthusiastic members world-wide making us one of the larger one make car Clubs.
The Club has 65 local groups – our Noggins – and is represented by associated Scimitar Clubs in many parts of the world. We communicate with our members by way of an award-winning magazine we call SLICE, and we fill its pages with vast quantities of technical information to enable our members to keep their cars running in some cases on a minimalist budget.
We are a club affiliated to the RAC for motor sport purposes. The club has a very strong competition group who compete in sprints and speed hillclimb events in many parts of the country and are often guests to meetings run by Aston Martin, Jaguar, Bentley and others. We are the club that caters for all variations of the four-wheel marque. We host an International event each year in one of the European countries.
If you have a Reliant Scimitar GTE, GTC, Coupé, SS1, SST, Sabre or Middlebridge Scimitar, membership of our Club is a must. Further information is available from our website at www.scimitarweb.co.uk, club.secretary@rssoc.co.uk or telephone 0118 954 0725.
